Scenographic misting at the Baths of Caracalla with a custom-built system for a world-renowned archaeological site.

Custom-built scenographic misting technology has brought back the suggestion of steam at the Baths of Caracalla, the imperial thermal complex built in 216 AD.
In the new Specchio d'Acqua (Water Mirror) designed by architect Hannes Peer for the Soprintendenza Speciale di Roma

and spanning over 1,000 square metres, a line of 60 high-pressure nozzles restores, 1,800 years after water disappeared from the site, the atmosphere of the ancient thermal steam rooms in the heart of Rome.

Problem to solve

The challenges of enhancing archaeological sites.
Bringing great archaeological sites to life often runs into the same limit: ruins preserve the shape of ancient monuments, but not the life that animated them. At the Baths of Caracalla, a thermal complex inaugurated in 216 AD and visited every day by thousands of Romans, water was the element that brought the space to life, turning into steam in the heated rooms.

From the 5th century, when the aqueducts were cut off, that water disappeared: today's visitor can only imagine where it once flowed. Restoring that suggestion, almost 1,800 years later and without altering the monumental structures, calls for technology able to generate a realistic, safe scenographic effect compatible with a protected heritage site.

Problem resolution

The system that recreates the steam of the ancient baths.

High-pressure misting turns water into a cloud of droplets suspended in the air: the same principle as steam, applied to a monument that cannot be altered.

- Misting line: an 18-metre nozzle line is built into the long side of the stage within the Specchio d'Acqua, angled to project the cloud toward the centre of the pool, in continuity with the choreography's water and light effects.

- Pressure and flow rate: 60 nozzles operate at 60 bar, for a maximum combined flow of 42 litres of misted water per minute, calibrated to generate a dense, constant cloud visible even in broad daylight and with the site full of visitors.

- Water treatment: a multi-stage filtration module and a water steriliser ensure the misted water is free of viruses and bacteria, in line with Idrobase Group's "Breathe Healthy Air" philosophy, applied to all of its misting modules.

- System integration: the line is powered by a Fog 70 Basico module with pump and filters dedicated exclusively to the misting system, a solution designed to work alongside the scenic elements - submerged jets, spotlights and stage - conceived by architect Hannes Peer.

Key Features of the Misting System.
1. A realistic, dense scenographic cloud
60 nozzles at 60 bar generate a dense, even cloud along the entire 18-metre line, visible in any natural light and able to recreate, in the heart of Rome and in front of thousands of visitors, the suggestion of steam from the ancient thermal saunas.

2. A striking scenic effect with contained water use
With a maximum flow rate of 42 litres per minute distributed across 60 nozzles, the system creates a visually striking scenographic effect without the water waste of continuous-jet solutions, in line with the sustainability a historic site demands.
3. Custom-built for a constrained architectural context
The nozzle line was integrated into the perimeter of the stage without altering the 42x32-metre rectangular layout of the Specchio d'Acqua, confirming Idrobase's ability to adapt its proposed technology to highly complex monumental settings.

4. Sterilised water for a crowded public space
Treating the nebulized water to keep it free of viruses and bacteria ensures the safety of visitors in close contact with the cloud, at a site that hosts performances, ballets and cultural events open to the public all year round.

The results achieved

The return of the thermal steam experience, the enhancement of the site, the media spotlight.
The misting system completed the Specchio d'Acqua with the scenographic effect envisioned in architect Hannes Peer's design, reactivating - as Mirella Serlorenzi, director of the Baths of Caracalla, put it - "the memory of the ancient function of the Baths of Caracalla" through the water and misting effects. The Specchio is now also a venue for performances and culture, including ballets and opera.

The project received wide media coverage, picked up by national outlets, and gave Idrobase Group a special opportunity: to bring its technology to bear on the history of one of the best-preserved thermal complexes in the world, strengthening the company's positioning beyond the industrial sector.

A project like this shows how high-pressure misting, a technology born for industrial applications, can also become a tool for cultural storytelling, reconnecting today's public with the memory of a place.
